Peace Program

The central objective of this line of action is to contribute to creating and developing a culture for peace in Colombia. In order to do this, CINEP works to construct a lasting, just and stable peace in Colombia through the following approaches:

1. Educating individuals for an active, participatory democracy

In relation to this approach to bring about peace, the individual, determined by his or her relationships with other persons within a particular culture, is able to become him or herself through society. This individual –conscious of his or her personal capabilities and with a particular way of being, understanding reality, and acting within it- has an ongoing interaction with his or her social dynamic. And, even though this social dynamic already exists, it can also be transformed by the individual’s action.

The following projects are carried out through this approach:

    - Skills-Building for the Construction of Peace (Desarrollo de Habilidades para la Construcción de la Paz)

    - Peace and Co-Existence School (Escuela de Paz y Convivencia)

    - Peace Education at Society of Jesus Schools (Educación para la Paz en los colegios de la Compañía de Jesús – ACODESI)

2. Carrying out communication and public opinion processes in order to transform and construct social representations in favor of peace as culture.

An approach related to communication and public opinion processes in favor of peace must be carried out in order to achieve a culture of peace in Colombia. Insofar as these processes, a collective or collectives construct representations by way of interacting with information related to public concerns.

The following projects are carried out through this approach:

    - Post-Baccalaureate Program on Responsible Journalism in Armed Conflict (Diplomado Periodismo Responsable en el Conflicto Armado)

    - Radio Information Magazine: OH! SIMPLE AND CLEAR (Magazín Radial Informativo AH! SIMPLE Y CLARO)

    - Public Opinion Campaign: A Beam of Wood in the Eye – The Cost of the War (Campaña de Opinión Pública: La Viga en el Ojo – Los Costos de la Guerra)

3. Promoting reconciliation processes that attempt to restore relationships in the social fabric that have been broken by social and political violence in Colombia.

Reconciliation processes are carried out to restore relationships in the social fabric that have been broken by social and political violence in Colombia. These reconciliation processes include truth, justice and comprehensive reparation.

The following projects are carried out through this approach:

    - Eastern Antioquia Reconciliation Process (Proceso de Reconciliación en el Oriente Antioqueño)

    - Reconciliation and Peace in San Pablo and Cartagena, Bolívar, and Tierralta, Córdoba (Reconciliación y Paz en San Pablo y Cartagena, Bolívar, y Tierralta, Córdoba)

4. Strengthening social organizations to have an impact on regional and national political dynamics related to constructing peace.

In terms of public participation, civil society must be strengthened through civil participation and social organization processes that come out of local, regional and national contexts. Additionally, as a fundamental public policy for the life of Colombia, mechanisms and strategies must be carried out that contribute to the construction of peace and the negotiated resolution of the armed conflict.

The following projects are carried out through this approach:

    - Organizational strengthening with the indigenous people from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

    - Mobilizing civil initiatives for peace

    - Peace Week (supporting local experiences and producing educational material)
