National Participation and Analysis

This line of action brings together historical, structural and current research concerned with affairs of national interest. It also brings together experiences in education concerned with such issues as human rights, peace and co-existence, demanding human rights, constructing and putting into practice civil responsibilities, as well as the institutional communication and culture project.

Principally, CINEP has researched on social, economic, political and cultural issues affecting Colombia. Over the last decade, the Center has focused its research activity on the following areas: political violence and the creation of the State, social movements, communication and culture, poverty and development, comprehensive human rights, and justice and peace. Additionally, CINEP aims to integrate a complex analysis that contributes to overcoming polarizing and simplistic views in relation to these issues.

This thematic research involves such disciplines as history, anthropology, sociology, economics, political science and communication, in addition to diverse ways of working, which lets us select issues, analyze long-term social processes, and follow up on the interaction between political and social actors in different settings. CINEP has also developed its sources on an ongoing basis, and it presently has an updated and consolidated information system, which offers support and input for the participation, research, and dialogue activities undertaken by CINEP with other non-governmental organizations, academic centers, researchers and students, and government institutions.

The pilot education experiences on comprehensive human rights and civilian responsibilities, as well as on socially demanding rights, are meant to strengthen a culture for peace and co-existence that recognizes, protects, and strives to fully bring about rights and responsibilities. This is undertaken in order to broaden the impact of the education processes with the participating groups, organizations, and social sectors by way of methods that let these experiences be spread through the beneficiaries, who develop their own processes. The partnering organizations also attempt to gain recognition and participation in spheres and institutions where public policy is discussed and approved.

Since CINEP participates in development and peace processes, it is also involved in the debates concerning the narratives and symbols produced in the mass media and in the different public and private settings concerned with these issues. Being involved in debate concerning the use of symbols means the Center must have a comprehensive communication and information proposal that contributes to producing and visibilizing accounts and meanings that offer complex and diverse views on the current situation in Colombia, and that contribute to dialogue between persons and organizations.

As a part of these processes, alliances have been established with diverse networks sharing common platforms on thought and action, knowledges, and methods for systemizing experiences and information. These networks also promote strategic partnerships between social and institutional actors that work to construct a kind of development based on extending democracy, constructing an active citizenry, and the comprehensive respect for human rights.

Involvement in networks also allows for an exchange of reflections, documents, and experiences, which in turn generates knowledge and has an impact on the creation of local, national and global policy.
